Jan 2012
The long awaited, and for some the “dreaded”, 2012 is finally upon us. Instead of all the negative attention this New Year has been getting, I like to embrace it as a chance for change. A change in mindset and a new direction towards health! There has never been so much that threatens us in this world, but there has also never been so much potential for growth and enlightenment.
It seems like every year about this time people begin to make those resolutions for better health or a better body, only to make it a few months and then give up. Why is this?
Sure it’s hard, changing habits you have and are comfortable with is not an easy task. Many relate it to will power, but there is more to the story. Our habits are addictive, very addictive, so much that our bodies will not let us break these habits because they have depended on them to function for years. So it’s no wonder when we attempt to change them we don’t feel well and lose motivation. This is because the norm to “getting healthy” usually revolves around yo yo dieting, extreme exercise, or just unrealistic expectations we set for ourselves. So what are we to do if we want change?
We must focus on the REAL cause of our inability to stay on track, and to do this we must focus on the journey towards REAL HEALTH. The journey towards health never ends, although at some point you will reach a maintenance stage where all lifestyle changes that you begin to implement now will become second nature down the road, just like those hard to break current habits.
Real health begins with getting to the root cause of your own personal health issues or goals…be it weight loss, reducing your high blood pressure, recovering from depression, having clear skin, gaining energy…whatever it may be. When you address the foundations of health and respect your physiology as well as bio-individuality, health improves and the body responds! This way you can overcome those hurdles quicker and focus on the results your getting instead of obsessing about numbers.
Think of our bodies as amazing machines that are constantly turned on, never receiving a break or a clean up. Every running machine needs attention and care for it to run smoothly. When we don’t provide the correct building blocks (nutrients, nourishment) for our bodies, we don’t function properly and we begin to experience symptoms, very much like a car that is not well taken care of. Headaches, migraines, heartburn, acne, dry skin, inability or difficulty to lose weight/ gain weight, joint pain, fatigue, cravings, emotional changes, learning disabilities, lack of concentration/ attention…all of which if not addressed will develop into a diagnosis of some sort in the future. We are simply not meant to live this way, we need to develop better ways of caring for ourselves.
Our ancestors were largely free of modern diseases in the industrialized world today. Cancer, heart disease, diabetes, obesity and autoimmune disease were all extremely rare or even nonexistent.
Although we live in the age where technology has taken over, we are still humans with the same physiology, and we are still wired to thrive off of the foods our ancestors consumed.
Thousands of generations were naturally healthy and vibrant when eating a true whole foods diet, though when we stray from this, our health suffers and deteriorates.
So how can we start fresh?
You make the decision to commit yourself to becoming healthier. You acknowledge that it’s not going to be easy but well worth it and much quicker than suffering for the rest of your life with less than optimal health. Dedicate a realistic amount of time, or better yet just ride the journey and see where it takes you. Start by eliminating all disease causing, adulterated, allergenic , inflammatory modern foods, and focus on those that nourish you and have been nourishing the existence of humans for thousands of years!
How do I know what these foods are?
The most general answer I can give you is this: If your great grandparents wouldn’t recognize it as food, then it’s probably not. Anything that has been altered from its natural state is nutritionally compromised and doing harm to your body. Even foods that may look pure, may not be what they seem. Conventional meat, dairy, grains, and produce are not what they appear. We are now facing genetically modified seeds and plants, hormone and antibiotic filled meats, pasteurized and homogenized dairy. These so called “foods” are doing more harm than good to our bodies.
