According to the National Eczema Association, more than 30 million Americans are diagnosed with eczema. Odds are you or someone you know has or has had this condition.
Also called Atopic Dermatitis, eczema is as an itchy red rash that can appear anywhere on the body in varying severity. Although eczema is common in babies and adults alike, it often starts in infancy or childhood and continues on into adulthood. Conversely, it may go away and come back later in life. Just like acne and many other skin conditions, eczema is merely a symptom of a greater issue going on inside the body, and at the root is inflammation. The trick is figuring out what is causing the inflammation internally and addressing this.
People often wonder why I specialize in skin and digestive conditions. They find it odd that I would focus on two entirely different systems, but the truth is that they are intricately related. Most skin specialists, such as doctors or dermatologists, treat skin issues topically with ointments, creams, and/or steroids. This may help initially to decrease the appearance of the condition, but the root of the problem is never addressed and therefore the physical symptoms eventually come back. When topical treatments fail to produce sustainable results, doctors may prescribe antibiotics or other dangerous drugs that can leave someone in worse health than before they started taking them. Why? Because eczema is linked with low immunity and almost always weak digestive health. Since nearly 80% of our immune system is located in our gut, it’s easy to make the connection.
More than skin deep- Fix your gut first
This is where a large part of the problem lies. If one can focus on increasing immunity by targeting, supporting, and healing the gut (an unhealthy gut is also often called “Leaky Gut”), more often than not, Eczema can clear naturally. I’m not just saying this; I’ve seen and heard it from clients I have worked with and have lived through it from my own battle with acne. Myriad of skin conditions can be linked to digestive distress, which is where much of the inflammation lies.
This may sound shocking, but your diet is the best place to start addressing eczema. A nutrient dense, anti-inflammatory diet is crucial to healing your gut and increasing immunity. With this comes other factors that can also affect immunity such as food sensitivities, environmental toxins, and stress triggers, all of which can contribute to painful flare ups. Sound overwhelming? Bear with me. Healing the body takes time and patience but most of all knowledge. You have to know how to address the real cause correctly if you want long term results. Unfortunately, there just isn’t enough time or space here for me to tell you every detail of what you should and shouldn’t eat, and more importantly giving you the support you need from one little blog, but I can happily point you in the right direction.

“I witnessed countless examples of what doesn’t work for treating eczema, let alone cure it. It didn’t take long for me to realize, creams and drugs simply cannot fix this condition. That’s the bad news…but you already know it: There is no medical cure for eczema.”
This is Emily’s daughter as a child when she was suffering with eczema on the left, and then later after addressing the internal inflammation causing the eczema on the right.
